The Primary Respiratory Mechanism
The Primary Respiratory Mechanism (PRM) is the deepest, most important cycle of breathing we have. It is not the exchange of air in our lungs but the expression of our animating force. Some refer to it as the breath of life.
Primary- underlying all other physiologic function
Respiratory- concerned with cellular respiration and the spark giving rise to the breath
Mechanism- A synchronized motion of all the parts of the body working as a unified whole
This biorhythm cycles 10-14 times per minute. It is a subtle expansion <-> retraction or "inhalation" and "exhalation" that a trained practitioner feels everywhere in the body. All bones, tissues and fluids express the PRM.
Like the cycling currents and fluctuating tides that keep the oceans alive the PRM rhythm touches and energizes each and every cell. It is the intelligent mechanism of auto-regulating and self-healing in the body.
The PRM is comprised of five major components.
• The inherent motility of the brain and spinal cord
• The fluctuation of Cerebral Spinal Fluid (CSF)
• The tissues that envelop the brain and spinal cord containing the CSF
• The articular mobility of the cranial bones
• The involuntary movement of the sacrum
"These five parts concerning cranial and sacral poles, nerve, membrane, and fluid are integrated into one harmonious physiologic mechanism which has no beginning and no end." -
Viola Frymann D.O.
