Ida P. Rolf, Ph.D.
Rolfing® Structural Integration is the life’s work of Dr. Ida P. Rolf. She earned her Ph.D. in Biological Chemistry form Colombia University in 1920. Working as a research scientist for the Rockefeller Institute she did ground breaking work in the field of Organic Chemistry. When faced with family health problems that were not being resolved through existing medical practices she began to explore Osteopathy, Chiropractic, Homeopathy, Tantric Yoga, and the Alexander Technique. Eventually she combined her knowledge of connective tissue physiology with hands-on work discovering the fundamental Rolfing principles of myofascial release. As Dr. Rolf continued to refine her work she began to understand the importance of addressing the whole body as well as any afflicted areas.

Through the late fifties and early sixties Dr. Rolf taught what she called Structural Integration to Osteopaths, Chiropractors, and Physicians around the world. In the late 1960’s she began teaching at Esalen in Big Sur California where the name Rolfing was coined and its popularity sky-rocketed. In 1971 the Rolf Institute was founded in Boulder Colorado and today there are two schools teaching Dr. Rolf’s approach to Structural Integration, the Rolf Institute and the Guild for Structural Integration.
